Liquid Intelligent Technologies has announced the launch of a major high-speed fiber ring in Botswana's capital, Gaborone.

The Gaborone Metro Ring is being rolled out in two phases and aims to benefit hundreds of businesses in the country via what Liquid calls a "high-capacity, high-speed, and secure telecommunication network."

"The launch of the first phase will reduce tariffs for local and international data products, making it more accessible to small and medium businesses that have previously been disadvantaged as compared to the larger enterprises," Odirile Tamajobe, MD of Liquid Intelligent Technologies Botswana, said in a statement about the project.

Liquid believes increased access to high-speed fiber connectivity is critical to improving telecommunication services for businesses and individuals, and that it will also bring about substantial social and economic benefits, including employment opportunities, and contribute to the overall development and expansion of the national economy.

"This project is a major milestone in Botswana realizing its potential as one of Africa's growing economic hubs. The completion of the first phase reinforces Liquid's commitment to meeting the growing demand for connectivity and aligns with our vision of a digitally connected Botswana in which no one is left behind," added Tamajobe.

Increased connectivity for Botswana

The fiber ring is targeting high-density areas of Gaborone to support the surging demand for high-speed Internet as an increasing number of local businesses continue their digital transformation journeys.

The project also supports the government's strategic plan, Botswana Vision 2036, to elevate the country's economic status from upper-middle-income to high-income within the next 13 years.

Connected city

Last month, Paratus Botswana also announced the completion of its own metro fiber ring around the capital of Gaborone.

The local subsidiary of pan-African operator Paratus Group said many of its financial services clients, including leading banks, had already switched over to the new network.

In July 2021, Liquid Intelligent Technologies and Facebook also announced a partnership to build an extensive long-haul and metro fiber network in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which will ultimately connect to the planned 2Africa undersea cable.

In May 2023, Liquid Dataport launched a new fiber route connecting Mombasa in Kenya to Muanda in the DRC.

This followed a partnership between Liquid Intelligent Technologies and Nokia in February 2023 for a new terrestrial fiber route connecting Kenya and South Africa.

Liquid Intelligent Technologies and Liquid Dataport are part of Cassava Technologies, a pan-African technology group.
