Kenyan-based payments platform Cellulant has announced the resignation of its Group CEO, Akshay Grover, effective from January 2024, saying he is leaving to focus on personal matters.

Grover was hired by the company in 2021 as the CFO and was appointed as the CEO in the same year.

Cellulant co-founder Ken Njoroge had previously held the position for almost two decades.

In a statement, the fintech company said its current CFO, Peter O'Toole, will oversee the organization's operations as acting CEO.

It said that under Grover's leadership, Cellulant strengthened its position both on the African continent and internationally.

"His efforts have been pivotal in enhancing the Cellulant brand and driving the company's strategic objectives," the company said.

Before working at Cellulant, Grover was the chief investment officer at IT services company Ison.

African companies changing leadership positions

Grover's resignation comes at a time when different organizations on the continent have been making leadership changes.

Earlier this week, Swedish multinational Ericsson appointed Majda Lahlou Kassi as the vice president and head of West Africa and Morocco, effective from January 2024.

On the telco side, Airtel Africa announced that CEO Segun Ogunsanya will retire at the end of June 2024 and will be replaced by the operator's director of transformation, Sunil Taldar.

In December 2023, pan-African operator MTN announced some changes to its executive lineup, with MTN Ghana CEO Selorm Adadevoh becoming group ghief commercial officer and Stephen Blewett taking over the top job at MTN Ghana.
