TelCables launches new PoP in Durban, South Africa

TelCables South Africa, a subsidiary of ICT solutions provider Angola Cables, has opened a new point of presence (PoP) at the Teraco Riverhorse DB1 data center facility in Durban, South Africa.

TelCables said the PoP – which is now live – will strengthen East-to-West connectivity and serve as a gateway for Internet service providers (ISPs), fiber operators and content delivery networks requiring reliable, low-latency connections to Internet services and content across the East Coast of Africa and South Africa.

"The deployment of the new Point of Presence will cater to the growing demand for advanced, scalable 'As a Service' solutions and boost digital infrastructure in the region," TelCables South East Africa CEO Sudhir Juggernath said in a statement.

The high-speed data exchange platform – which also links to other subsea cable systems and redundancy options on 2Africa, Peace, Metiss and Seacom networks – brings cacheable digital services and content closer to Western markets and the Americas.

"Businesses will have access to TelCables' international Tier 1 IP and IPX Network and the option to connect to more than 66 global data centres – all of which are supported by low latency routing options to West Africa, South America, the USA, UK, Europe and Asia," Juggernath explained.

The CEO said the Durban PoP will empower the development of new networks and digital ecosystems across the East Coast of Africa and South Africa and will help facilitate the participation of more local ISPs and businesses in the global digital economy.

"The PoP gives users the option to also peer locally and take advantage of a range of integrated solutions from IP Transit, Direct Internet Access, Global Data Center Interconnect (GDI), Cloud services and other applications – all of which are payable in local currency," he continued.

Expanding connectivity across Africa

Angola Cables launched the TelCables business in West Africa in November 2022, and Juggernath was appointed CEO for the Southern and East African regions in September 2023.

In a recent video interview, Juggernath told Connecting Africa about the group's plans to expand its footprint.

In November 2023, vendor-neutral data center provider Teraco completed an expansion project at the Durban facility – making it the largest data center in the KwaZulu-Natal province. It also has major data center facilities in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Last month, Teraco also announced it was building a 120-megawatt utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) energy facility in the Free State province. The power generated will be wheeled to Teraco's facilities across South Africa.
