Glo Ghana signs roaming deal with AirtelTigo
Ghana's smallest network, Glo, has signed a national roaming agreement with AirtelTigo for voice, data and SMS services.
Ghana's smallest network, Glo, has signed a national roaming agreement with government-owned AirtelTigo which it believes will provide wider coverage and a faster Internet experience for its customers.
The deal – which covers voice, data and SMS services – went live on April 23, 2022, and will see Glo customers automatically latch onto the AirtelTigo network.
"It is worth noting that all other conditions of service remain unchanged. This means Glo customers will continue to recharge with Glo's scratch cards or electronic credit transfers and enjoy all existing Glo products including Value Added Services," the operators said in a joint statement.
Despite operating in Ghana since 2012, Glo only had about 847,000 mobile customers in the West African nation at the end of 2021, according to statistics from market research company Omdia, giving it just 2% market share in the country.
In comparison, AirtelTigo had almost 7.4 million customers, or 17.6% market share, a bit behind Vodafone Ghana's almost 8.3 million customers, or 19.7% market share, and way behind leading operator MTN which had over 25.3 million mobile users in December 2021, controlling over 60% of the market.
Glo said that customers who face any difficulty in automatically latching onto the AirtelTigo network are advised to manually select the AirtelTigo network in their device's network settings and enable data roaming, under mobile data network settings.
AirtelTigo – a joint venture between Bharti Airtel and Millicom – was sold to the government of Ghana in November 2021.
Glo also operates in Nigeria, where it is the country's second biggest operator behind MTN Nigeria, and only slightly ahead of rival Airtel Nigeria when it comes to market share.
